Laie Falls

To those faithful blog readers (all three of you), sorry for the delay in posting. Being out of a computer complicates the whole blog thing, plus I've been incredibly busy. Monday was a holiday of some sort, Presidents Day I think, but don't quote me on that. Some friends and I decided to go on a little hike to Laie Falls, affectionately know as the Laie Trickle. We had a very diverse group. We had a Mongolian, Japanese, Chinese, Hawaiian, Samoan, and me. Crazy eh? Well, as you can see, Laie falls is not exactly a thunderous fall! The hike is quite pretty, but the water is a little disappointing. For me, it felt unusual as we hiked to stand on the summit of a hill and look out and see the ocean. At home, I just see more mountains or lots of land. But it was neat seeing bright blue water! The hike turned into a bit of a climb at one point, which was fun. I had suggested this hike when my family was here. That would have been a mistake. I'm sure there would have been some who would have turned around instead!

The water under the fall was, how shall I put it, COLD! We found that by standing and raising our elbows above the water, we could stay warmer than with our arms in the water. I hope someone in science can prove why that works. In jumping into the water, I dove precariously close to some rocks, which could have done some damage. Fortunately, I was nimble as a butterfly and swam to safety! I did sustain a small injury on the way home. I developed a blister on the back of my heel which then tore off, so it was rather exposed and painful. When we stopped for a little water break, I looked at it. I pretended I was tough it was okay, but Dolly thought it looked pretty bad and insisted something be done. It was in a really painful spot for walking, and I was glad to have some help! She happened to have an old lavalava there which we made into a wrap of sorts. My leg looked like it just came through a war in Samoa, but it felt much better!

It is a fun hike! I look forward to doing some more hikes while I'm good!

Beautiful Hawaii

Hawaii really wouldn't be the same without its amazing sunsets. I enjoy taking a break from the daily grind (yes, work does take place here in the islands) to enjoy a nice sunset on the beach. This photo to the left is the famous Sunset beach. The surf was actually quite big the day I took this, even though it looks flat here. There was some tourist lady who tried to go out with her boogie board. A big wave came and she put her board out straight in front of her to "stop" the wave. Instead, the wave hit the board straight into her face, knocked her over, and then the wave kinda tumbled her around a bit. It was really sad, but I found myself laughing hysterically. Wouldn't you? She was shaken up but fine.


This is Sharks Cove. The surf was quite high this night, and when the wave hit the reef...WOW! Sadly, due to the fact that I was too concentrated on enjoying the moment, I didn't catch some of the biggest waves, but these were pretty good I thought. I did have the thought come to my mind (as opposed to the times when I have a thought come to my index finger): "What happens to all the fish in Sharks Cove when the waves are huge like that? Do they get smashed into the rocks and die? If anyone knows the answer, I'd like to know!

Wet Volleyball!

Today, some friends wanted to play beach volleyball. We planned to go to the usual spot at Turtle bay. It seemed like good weather, but down the road it suddenly turned dark. Then it started raining. Bilge was sitting behind me on my scooter. It was raining fairly hard, when he said, "Hey, it must be raining further up...all the oncoming cars are using their windshield wipers!" I screamed, "It IS raining, I'm just absorbing it for you!" He finally started to feel it as we slowed down at the gate to Turtle Bay. I was soaked clear through. As we pulled up to the beach, it was POURING! We decided to wait it out, and ended up staying to play. Our games were full of intermittent rain storms. It was actually rather fun! We were soaked and we hadn't even gotten into the ocean yet!

Driving home was crazy! It rained much harder on the way home. I was getting hit with raindrops while going about 40 mph, which honestly made my face numb after a while. The photo you see is shortly after Bilge and I pulled up to the Hale. Crazy stuff eh? Hopefully, this is temporary, but my phone is not working since this episode. Everything was drenched...so pray the phone comes alive!
